Dr. Shulman has been dedicated to writing about medicine and science for more than twenty-five years, and this work continues that tradition.

His subjects are the diseases of childhood that announce themselves plainly, such as juvenile arthritis, lupus, dermatomyositis, and vasculitis, and those that do not: complex regional pain syndrome, amplified musculoskeletal pain, dysautonomia and POTS, and the post-viral illnesses, including Long COVID, that have brought a much older problem into public view.

Beneath it all, the fundamental questions remain: what does a test result reveal and what does it conceal? Why do rare conditions often go unnoticed for years? Why does one child recover while another with the same diagnosis does not? And what responsibilities does a doctor have toward a family during the prolonged period before a diagnosis is clear?
